The office of High Stewart was made hereditary to the family by Malcolm IV. James 5th High Stewart, bravely supported Sir William Wallace and Robert the Bruce in their struggle for Scottish independence. Walter, 6th High Stewart, Married Princess Marjory, daughter of Robert the Bruce, and from these were descended the royal house of Stewart.
The male line of the royal house Stewart's ended with the death in 1807 of Prince Henry, Cardinal Duke of York, brother of Prince Charles Edward. Many noble families were descended from the royal line, and Stewarts have held or hold the dukedoms of Albany, Rothesay, and Lennox, the Marquisate of Bute, and the earldoms of Menteith, Angus, Atholl, Strathearn, Carrick, Buchan, and Galloway.
Among other Stewart families were those of Bonkyl, Blackhall, and Greenock, Castlemilk, Balquhidder, Achnacone, Ardsheil, Ardvorlich, Dalguise, Fasnacloich, Grandtully, and Invernahyle. The Royal Stewart tartan was always regarded as the personal tartan of the royal house of Scotland, and is now the royal tartan of Her Majesty The Queen. |
